Job-slashing HP ‘to hire 15,000 staff in India’

‘We haven’t announced any such thing’
UPDATE HP may be axing 27,000 staff members globally, but it could be about to help improve unemployment figures in India, with 15,000 hires possibly on the cards.

At least this is according to Indian news site Daily Bhaskar, which claims the troubled tech titan has written to Chandigarh city administrators in eastern India to ask permission to use a vacant space in the IT park. The report suggests that outsourcing giant Wipro was allotted the 30 acres of land to build a campus in 2009 but never began construction.

Instead, HP expressed an intent to set up a base from which to recruit thousands of graduates, the report states, adding that the blabbermouth Chandigarh officials are reviewing HP’s application to use the space.

In the spring HP began cobbling together its PC and printer businesses and on the enterprise side stuck its hardware, global accounts, and technology services team together.

Rationalisation is expected – and not just at veep level.
CEO Meg Whitman also announced just weeks ago that the US giant will slash some 27,000 jobs globally – or 7.7 per cent of the workforce – to save up to $3.5bn by the end of October 2014.This is estimated to include some 1,600 peeps in the UK.

A corporate PR chap at HP told The Channel: "I can confirm we have not announced any plans to expand our operations in India".An HP spokesman in India has since added: "I can confirm that HP has no plans to either buy or lease office space or hire 15,000 youth in Chandigarh. The report is inaccurate."

Hewlett-Packard to employ 15,000 youths in Chandigarh
Chandigarh: The IT giant, Hewlett-Packard(HP) will employ 15,000 individuals in the city. The firm will also invest in the IT park project. The firm has written a letter to the city administration to seek space for their campus in the IT park.

After the Indian IT major, Wipro, surrendered the plot allocated to them, HP has shown keen interest in establishing their campus alongside hiring the city youths.

A senior official has revealed that the city administration is considering the allocation of the Wipro plot to HP. The firm’s establishment in the city will enhance employment opportunities in the region, he added.

The multinational firm, Hewlett-Packard, began operations in 1939 and their business has flourished in 170 countries now. The firm specializes in IT products and services across the globe.

The city administration had allotted 30 acres of land to Wipro in the IT park, Phase II on April 5. The land was allotted at Rs 40 lakh per acre to the Indian IT major. Alongside Wipro, the city administration had also allotted land to Tech Mahindra and Bharti Airtel.

Wipro was subjected to construct its campus on the allotted by September 2009. But, the firm declined to construct its campus in the city despite numerous reminders by the city administration.
