    S. Africa : Lexmark launches Cartridge Collection Programme

As a leading provider of printing solutions, with an ongoing stream of consumables through the production and distribution of millions of supplies for Lexmark printers worldwide, Lexmark ensures environmental responsibility is also achieved through the Lexmark Cartridge Collection Programme (LCCP).

The programme strategically supports the company’s core approach of ‘Print Less, Save More’, which enables customers to achieve savings on money, time and their carbon footprints.

LCCP is an initiative that was introduced to provide all customers with a convenient and hassle-free means to return empty cartridges, ensuring they are then re-used and recycled correctly. Lexmark’s focus on reducing contribution towards landfill waste has meant millions of toner cartridges have been recycled or otherwise re-used through cartridge collection programmes, rather than ending up in waste streams, and ultimately, our landfills.

The LCCP is made available for both Lexmark laser and inkjet cartridges. Inside all Lexmark inkjet cartridge boxes, a recycle envelope enables inkjet customers to conveniently send back their used cartridges via a free postal service, and for business customers using large numbers of laser cartridges, the programme provides free delivery and servicing of Lexmark collection containers, which are permanently stationed within customers’ premises.

The results of the programme speak for themselves. The number of cartridges collected annually has tripled in four years, and the number of cartridges re-used has increased five-fold during the same period.

Subsequently, Lexmark South Africa drives another local initiative called Cartridge Recycling Initiatives for Babies (CRIB). Started in April 2002, CRIB is a long-term commitment to Cotlands, a local non-profit community development organisation, whose primary beneficiaries are orphaned and vulnerable children, who, in many instances, have been impacted by HIV/Aids.

Donations are generated by Lexmark customers returning empty Lexmark cartridges for recycling and given in the form of “Baby Days”. One Baby Day equals the cost of housing, feeding, clothing and care for one child at Cotlands for one day. Since inception, CRIB has donated more than R3.5 million towards this initiative and simultaneously kept tons of empty cartridges out of our waste streams.
