Spain: Specialist channel becoming more prominent in consumables market
With positive growth rates in the last two years, the specialist channel for office consumables in Spain is causing a change in consumer trends.
Currently, 15% of inkjet cartridges and 9% of laser cartridges are being sold via specialist channels. Results from the first half of 2011 show that inkjet cartridges have maintained a slight growth after several months of strong performances; the segment registered 2% inter-annual growth. Laser cartridges demonstrated an increase of over 10% in comparison with the same period of last year.
It is important to note that not all products have developed as well in these shops. The main increases in sales were due to non-genuine cartridges, although genuine cartridges also performed well in this channel.
The latest GfK study on behavior within the specialist channel reveals that price and customer service are having a major influence on the consumer when purchasing a product.
At the moment, between specialists and recycling companies, there are 723 shops in Spain; over 60% of which belong to a chain or other association. Furthermore, despite the continued success of traditional shops, online sales are growing, with 30% of stores now selling through their websites.
