Study Predicts Tablets Will Outsell Computers by 2015

All units will reach over 3 billion within four years
    San Francisco, CA-
It appears that tablets are going to be capable of surpassing both desktops and laptop sales by 2015.

According to Gartner’s, which has released a study that surveyed the tablet, PC, mobile device sales over the last year. Across the globe, sales of each device type is set to reach 2.4 billion units this year and continue to move up toward 3 billion, likely reaching that tally by 2017.

The numbers showing tablets outpacing desktops and laptops are not surprising if one steps back to look at the big picture. Many individuals already own PCs and laptops that service their limited functionality, and thus needn’t be updated. More individuals are looking to broaden their mobile-functionality, and thus tablets are the hot item to own along side said laptops and PCs.

The release of the tablet and their mobile-capability has accelerated the adoption of such devices over the purchasing of traditional computing devices. Now it is being predicted that by 2015, the unit table sales total will reach 337.8 million, and will eclipse the combined sales of desktops and laptops, according to Gartner.

The overall numbers also underline a larger shift of computing to tablet usage. Android has the leading operating system on such a device-type, surpassing Windows, as well as the combined effort of iOS and Mac. Google is expected to continue to broaden the gap in the next handful of years as well.

Microsoft, despite taking a hit in its own PC business core, is expected to look to continue growing. The company is testing the inroads that will lead to tablet business.

Meanwhile, the mobile phone business continues to see slow growth, and will continue to outsell all other categories, even when combined. Gartner has now estimated that over 1.8 billion phones will be sold in 2013. It also notes that overall sales will likely grow by 2.1 billion by 2017.
