THAILAND : SAMSUNG PRINTER SALES UP IN Q1
Thai
Samsung Electronics has had a successful start to the year, having
overtaken the previous leader in two segments of the printer market in
the first quarter.IT business group leader Boonlerd Viboonkiat said
yesterday that according to IDC – the IT market research house –
Samsung’s share of the colour and mono multifunction laser-printer
segments as at March 31 was 33 per cent and 31 per cent,
respectively. For colour multifunction laser printers, Samsung’s share
increased from 10 per cent at the end of last year, while that of
Hewlett-Packard – the former leader – dropped from 40 per cent to 32
per cent.Meanwhile, Samsung’s share in mono multifunctional laser
printers last year was 29 per cent, rising to 31 per cent and market
leadership three months later. As at end-2008, Brother Commercial
(Thailand) had 32 per cent of the overall multifunction laser-printer
market, while Hewlett-Packard and Samsung had 23 per cent and 29 per
cent, respectively.By the first quarter, Samsung’s share had increased
to 31 per cent, while those of Brother and Hewlett-Packard had fallen
to 26 per cent and 14 per cent, respectively.Meanwhile,
Hewlett-Packard is the market leader in the overall printer market,
which comprises the ink-jet and laser segments, with a share of 40 per
cent, down from 42 per cent at the end of last year. Samsung’s share
rose to 28 per cent at the end of March from 25 per cent last year.Boonlerd
said the laser-printer market in the first three months of the year had
dropped by 14 per cent in term of unit sales from a year earlier, but
that of Samsung had grown by 8 per cent.”Amid the global crisis, other
competitors have cut production because of fears about oversupply in
the printer market. But Samsung believes this is a good time to gain as
much market share as we can. Therefore, we have geared up to overtake
our rivals since the first quarter this year,” he said.Boonlerd said
Samsung was restructuring market channels by increasing the number of
distributors. It expects to have three new distributors this month. It
has also focused more on marketing upcountry this year as it sees the
provinces as having room to grow, particularly in the corporate
segment. The company plans to launch about 10 series of laser printers
this year, aimed at capturing both the corporate and home-use markets.Samsung
targets to be the market leader in other laser-printer segments – mono
and colour laser printers – within three years, he added. The company
generated revenue of US$5 million (Bt170 billion) from printer products
in the first quarter.”IDC forecasts that printer-market unit sales this
year will shrink by 14 per cent from last year. But Samsung projects
its sales to grow by 24 per cent from $16 million to $20 million in
2009,” he said. -
