Three Things You Should Know about Toner
HP recently hosted the first HP Printing Tech Day at our Boise campus. The event introduced HP’s printing expertise to media and business owners, and answered questions about new printers, devices, and solutions. During the one-day event, attendees toured the LaserJet and Solutions test labs, as well as the HP Digital Oasis and LES Museum.

The HP Supplies demonstration seemed to draw the biggest “oohs and ahhs” from the crowd, so I want to share the top three things that I taught attendees about toner in my “Bill Nye the Science Guy” experimental demonstration (See the full demonstration: Printer Comparison’s video).

Here are the top three things you should know about toner:

1. It takes approximately 150 million toner particles to form a 5% image.
This means a 10,000 page print cartridge contains more than 1.5 trillion toner particles! That’s a lot of toner particles to produce a printed image, so toner consistency is crucial.

To a large degree, consistency depends on the manufacturing method, and chemically-prepared toners (those in which each toner particle is chemically grown to the correct size and shape) can be advantageous.

However, even conventional toners (these are known as “pulverized” toners and are developed by pulverizing or grinding a specific polymer to get it to the correct size) can be made to perform consistently if the appropriate amount of post production processing is applied. This is one reason why Original HP toners tend to deliver more consistent, reliable, and repeatable results than aftermarket offerings.

2. There is no such thing as “Universal Toner.”
No one single type of toner is going to function reliably and consistently in all devices. Toner properties need to be developed and adjusted with the device performance (e.g. print speed is varied). For example, one of the toner properties that must change continuously is the fusing properties – to ensure the toner melds properly to a page.

In fact, in a color device – the “formula” among different colors in the same print engine – needs to be modified to account for the electrical properties of the different pigments that are used to give the toner its cyan, yellow, magenta and black colors.

3. It’s important to use Original HP toner.
Original HP toner is better to use when comparing it to a cheaper remanufactured or refilled cartridge – and it helps customers save time and money.

One out of three printer technicians surveyed said they replace the maintenance kits on HP LaserJet printer more often when non-HP cartridges are installed.

56% of HP Color LaserJet users and 42% of HP monochrome LaserJet users who use non-HP toner cartridges experience problems with those cartridges.

Printer technicians reported four times as many service calls from the use of non-HP toner cartridges as compared to customers using Original HP toner cartridges.

Whether your business is printing a full-color marketing brochure, or black and white business documents, you get affordable, high-quality output with Original HP toner. Unlike non-HP cartridges, Original HP cartridges are precision engineered to work together with your HP LaserJet printer. The toner formula is accurately matched with your printer to deliver consistent quality documents every time you print. In turn, this helps you lower the cost of printing, increase productivity and reduce your environmental impact.
