NHS manager facing jail for ordering £160,000 worth of office supplies to sell online

A NHS manager who cashed in by ordering £160,000 of unnecessary office supplies for her staff before selling them on is facing jail.

Madeleine Webster, 47, who worked as an administrator for the NHS in Liverpool , pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of position after ordering thousands of ink cartridges between April 2008 and November 2012 and selling them to a man in Yorkshire.

Her husband Stephen Webster, 47, who took the stolen printers across the Pennines for sale also pleaded guilty to possession of criminal property.

Stephen McNally, prosecuting, told Liverpool crown court   the loss to the NHS was in the region of £160,000 and that they were pursuing a proceeds of crime act to try to recover some of the funds.

He said that Stephen Webster’s pleas was entered on the basis that: “His role was to deliver cartridges to a man in Leeds.”

He added: “During the course of her employment with the NHS Mr Webster would order cartridges for printers not present at the NHS and those cartridges would be sold on.”

Mr McNally said that the payments were made mostly to Madeleine Webster through Paypal though some other payments were in cash.

Their barrister said Stephen Webster, who currently works as a sales director, would now have to hand in his resignation.

Both were bailed to their home address of Cornice Road, Stoneycroft, and told to return for sentence on January 31.

Despite ordering a pre-sentence report be drawn Judge Robert Warnock said he thought that a prison sentence was an inevitability.
