US Government GSA Office Supplies Contract Is Open for Business
    Andy Medici, Staff Writer

The General Services Administration's latest generation of its strategically sourced office supplies contract is now ready for customers, according to an agency announcement issued on Dec. 22.

The Government Accountability Office denied the protests that contractors had filed against the Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiative Office Supply Third Generation contract (FSSI OS3), which means agencies can begin purchasing supplies using the vehicle.

The contract provides agencies already negotiated prices on everyday supplies like pens, paper, and printing items from a list of vendors and could save agencies $90 million a year, according to the agency. The second-generation version of the contract saved agencies about $370 million in costs since 2010.

Tom Sharpe, the commissioner of GSA's Federal Acquisition Services, said in an announcement that the new contract will save agencies money while promoting small business spending. The agency estimates that 90 percent of spending through the new contract will go to small businesses.

Out of 21 awards under the contract 20 have gone to small businesses, according to GSA.

"The evolution of the GSA Office Supplies FSSI solution is a great example of how the government can improve on an already great program with each iteration, increasing the savings to taxpayers through lessons learned and best practices," Sharpe said.
