TONERNEWS.COMLexmark Firmware Update
by Lexmark Singapore on Tuesday, May 10, 2011We have seen multiple postings in regards to Lexmark’s firmware update and ink usage on our inkjet devices. We wanted to provide clear communication on this for all to see here on our Facebook wall.
In January of this year, Lexmark released a firmware update for its current line of inkjet printers that addressed a number of issues, one of which was the unauthorized use of third-party “cloned” versions of the #100 Ink Cartridge.
Lexmark sells inkjet cartridges that are subject to a single-use restriction and Lexmark´s return cartridge program. The program is part of Lexmark´s corporate responsibility to ensure environmentally sound business policies. It assists Lexmark in its end of life product management, allows Lexmark to recycle cart…ridges it collects and thereby avoids landfill.Notably, Lexmark was just named by Corporate Responsibility Magazine as one of the top 100 Best Corporate Citizens.
When a Lexmark inkjet printer is purchased the customer is initially (first time) informed by the printer license located on the printer box, which states that the printer is designed to work with on…ly genuine Lexmark ink cartridges. The same terms are part of the End User License Agreement (EULA) included on the device driver (second time) that accompanied the printer. The customer has the option of returning the printer to the point of purchase for a full refund if the customer does not accept these terms. The customer is also informed (third time) when they choose to download the before mentioned firmware update.
Customers have a clear choice. When purchasing ink cartridges, Lexmark customers have two options:
Lexmark Genuine regular ink cartridges without license terms that they may a) return to Lexmark free of charge (for recycling by Lexmark), b) refill, recycle or remanufacture themselves, or c) provide to third parties for refilling, recycling, or remanufacturing….Any Lexmark Genuine regular ink cartridge can be refilled by a customer or a third party and will continue to work in their Lexmark printer.Lexmark Genuine Return Program ink cartridges that provide customers with an up-front discount in exchange for their agreement to use the ink cartridge once and return it only to Lexmark for remanufacturing… and recycling. The firmware update in January included modifications of the technology used to enforce the original printer functionality, whereas these products require the use of only genuine Lexmark cartridges.
Thank you,
