XEROX : RANKS 28TH IN U.S.
PATENTS IN 2009
Xerox Corp. was
issued 624 U.S. patents in 2009, an 18 percent increase over 2008, data
from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office shows. Xerox ranked 28th on
the list of the top 50 firms to receive U.S.-based utility patents last
year. The annual corporate ranking released Tuesday by IFI Patent
Intelligence, part of Wolters Kluwer N.V., U.S. corporations garnered 49
percent of all U.S. utility patents issued in 2009, with the remainder
going to foreign firms.
This was only the second time foreign
companies collectively received more U.S. patents than U.S.-based firms,
the agency said.”It’s foolhardy to use this statistic to infer that
American firms are losing ground to foreign competitors because with
patents it’s important to consider quality, as well as quantity,” said
Darlene Slaughter, general manager of IFI Patent Intelligence, in a
statement. “What we’re seeing this year is that innovation in American
firms is far from declining, in fact, many had impressive gains and
several posted record numbers of total new patents.”
As a whole,
U.S. companies received roughly 7 percent more utility patents in 2009
than in 2008, compared with 6.5 percent by foreign companies.Tokyo-based
Fuji-Xerox Co. Ltd., a Xerox joint venture, received 425 U.S. patents
last year and ranked 45th on the list.
