XEROX restructuring, but committed to Rochester

officials at XEROX hosted Rochester leaders Monday night to talk about
the company’s commitment to the area. During tough economic times, CEO
Anne Mulcahy says XEROX has been able to maintain moderate growth but
admitted restructuring and layoffs are possible.She said, “Rochester
continues to be a place that’s attractive to XEROX to have its largest
concentration of people and where we can invest in our toner plant and
facilities.”

Mulcahy and president Ursula Burns say they are
working on a company wide restructuring plan, which could involve
layoffs. They’re quick to say any cuts here in Rochester would be
proportionate to cuts made at other areas of operation.Mulcahy said
there are a few main reasons why she will continue to carry a large
part of the work force here. She said, “Part of it’s the history. I
would say we have roots. We have 7,600 people, very talented people
that call this home and love it. And quite frankly, we can’t blow them
out of here, in terms of their desire to remain in the greater
Rochester area,’ said Mulcahy.Last September, XEROX opened a toner
manufacturing plant at the Webster campus. The president says it was
not about staying in Rochester, but what was right for the company. 
Burns said because of incentives from the county and state, they built
here. She said, “We do business a lot of different places, employ
people from a lot of different places and so we try to take into
account the hard facts and not the nationalistic facts.”

XEROX
leaders met with area leaders like Assemblyman Joe Morelle Monday
night. He sees XEROX as a success story but believes New York has some
work to do to become more business friendly.Morelle said, “We have to
be mindful. Our cost structure is still too high and we’ve got to work
on that as a state and region.”Anne Mucahy had advice for businesses
struggling here in Rochester. She said, stay focused on your people,
continue to invest in innovation, and listen to your customers.XEROX
has 7,600 employees in the Rochester area. That is more than all the
other US job sites combined.
