scanning or faxing without having to shop for a third-party print server
Lexmark T430
Editors’ rating: Not yet rated
The good: Small, cheap toner; multipurpose feed; works with multiple
operating systems.
The bad: Paper-handling add-ons could bust stressed budgets.
The price: $700 with wireless capability
The Lexmark T430 squeezes high laser-speed claims and business expandability
into a tight package. If you need a printer that spits out black- and-white
pages in a hurry, the Lexmark T430 is vying to join your office. This
expandable, fairly priced machine claims to produce an impressive 32 pages per
minute of text; while other lasers that approach 30 ppm demand nearly double the
$550 base price. The $150 option to add 802.11g wireless capability is
attractive, too.
HP OfficeJet 7410
Editors’ rating: 8.0 out of 10
The good: Media-card readers; color LCD; excellent, fast photo prints.
The bad: Forces ink-swapping between text and photo printing.
The price: $500
If you’re willing to gamble on an all-in-one at double the price of lesser
models, the HP OfficeJet 7410 promises to reward you with rich features. Like
many cheaper all-in-ones, this device will print, copy and scan from
digital-media cards and will send faxes. But the 7410 also prints on both sides
of a page, makes legal-size scans and connects to a wireless network. That makes
it hard to beat if you have a passion for sharing photos.
HP Photosmart 2710
Editors’ rating: 7.8 out of 10
The good: Makes excellent photo and text prints; fast printing and scanning.
The bad: Expensive; clumsy input-tray design; forces ink-swapping.
The price: $400
This great All-in-one costs more than most but delivers on speed, quality and
features. The HP Photo-smart 2710 prints beautiful text and photos; it copies in
black and color; and it does a tolerable job of scanning. It has a built-in
stand-alone fax so you won’t have to fax through your computer. It also comes
with built-in wired and wireless networking. For a small wireless office or a
home network with limited space, the HP 2710 might be just right.
Samsung CLP-550
Editors’ rating: 6.8 out of 10
The good: Inexpensive; built-in two-sided printing; very quiet.
The bad: Mediocre prints; fairly slow print speeds; expensive toner.
The price: $750 with wireless capability
Disappointing color quality detracts from the Samsung CLP-550’s performance,
with its fast and excellent gray-scale text capabilities. For a budget color
laser printer, it offers some top-of-the-line features,including a built-in
duplexer, an LCD on the control panel and decent paper capacity. These features
would make this printer a great choice for a small Office with plans to expand,
but its dull color prints could be a deal breaker for some, and the 802.11
option increases the price by $150. -
