    The global paper and packaging industry is facing another wave of disruption as war damage, tariffs and rising production costs hit manufacturers on multiple fronts: in Ukraine, Russian missiles struck the Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill in Obukhiv on October 7 (see below) , severely damaging production and warehouse facilities, equipment and utility infrastructure and forcing the mill to halt production; the facility, one of Ukraine’s major producers of cardboard, corrugated packaging and sanitary products, has now been attacked three times in six months. Pravda At the same time, Canadian paper packaging company Supremex is blaming the current U.S.-Canada tariff environment for an estimated $10 million to $12 million annual impact on operating earnings and plans to eliminate approximately 60 jobs, or 6% of its workforce, while consolidating production and accelerating technology investments in an effort to generate about $5.7 million in annualized savings. Packaging Dive Meanwhile, Sappi Europe has announced an €89-per-tonne price increase across its Paper Board portfolio, citing sustained cost pressures despite productivity improvements and cost-cutting efforts, with the increase applying to new orders and deliveries beginning November 1, 2026.
