tonerKeymasterCanon Acknowledges Ongoing Issues
with Multifunction Devices on Windows 11 24H2.
Despite Microsoft marking an issue with the eSCL scan protocol as resolved, Canon multifunction devices continue to face compatibility problems with Windows 11 24H2.A reader reached out to report persistent issues with their Canon ImageClass MF269dwโa multifunction printer, copier, scanner, and fax machine. While the device works fine on Windows 10, it fails to function correctly on Windows 11 unless both the computer and scanner are connected via wired Ethernet.
The reader also noted that a Canon technician described the issue as “erratic,” explaining that it seems to work or fail unpredictably depending on the user or situation.
In response to similar reports, Microsoft issued a compatibility safeguard hold in November on USB-connected devices using the Scanner Communication Language (eSCL) protocol. This followed complaints about glitches with device discovery after the Windows 11 update. Microsoft announced the issue was resolved in December.
However, it appears that the update (KB5048667) did not fully address the problem for Canon users. According to our reader, Canon support confirmed that the eSCL issue remains unresolved for many users in the 24H2 release.
We contacted Microsoft for clarification, and while they acknowledged the issue on December 20, the company has not provided further updates.
Canon, however, was more forthcoming. A spokesperson confirmed the company is aware of the problem impacting devices using its ScanGear MF driver, which allows for advanced scanning configuration.
Canonโs statement noted that while Microsoft is working on an OS fix, the timing for resolution has not yet been confirmed. The company expects to receive an update plan in January 2025.
For now, affected users are advised to either rely on Microsoftโs native scanning software or connect their devices directly via USB. One of the suggested alternatives is the Windows Fax and Scan app, a vintage utility that dates back to Windows Vista and is still included with Windows 11 (except on Arm editions). While this app may be a fun throwback, it’s not the most efficient solution for users accustomed to a different workflow, particularly after the disruptions caused by the Windows 11 24H2 update.
