to Renewable Energy at Five Manufacturing Sites for Printing Business.
In a landmark move for sustainability, Canon Inc. has announced the complete transition to renewable energy sources across five of its manufacturing sites that are central to its printing business. This initiative is part of the company’s broader commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and supporting global environmental goals.Canon’s Green Energy Milestone
The five manufacturing sites, which include Canon Suzhou Inc., Canon Vietnam Co., Ltd. (Thang Long Factory and Tien Son Factory), Canon Hi-Tech Thailand Ltd. (Ayutthaya Factory), and Canon Prachinburi Thailand Ltd., have all shifted to 100% renewable energy usage for the fiscal year 20231. These sites are responsible for producing Canon’s flagship printing products, such as office multifunctional devices, home inkjet printers, and large-format inkjet printers.Harnessing Solar Power
A significant portion of this green transition has been made possible through the installation of solar panels. For instance, at Canon Vietnam’s Thang Long Factory, solar panels cover approximately 39,000m² and have a generation capacity of 4.48 MW, providing about 18% of the plant’s total power needs1.Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)
To achieve the goal of 100% renewable energy, Canon has also utilized renewable energy certificates (RECs). RECs are market-based instruments that represent the property rights to the environmental, social, and other non-power attributes of renewable electricity generation1.Impact and Future Goals
This shift has increased the renewable energy usage rate at Canon’s final assembly sites for printing products to approximately 39.5% in 2023, a rise of about 5.8 percentage points from the previous year1. Moving forward, Canon plans to continue expanding its renewable energy portfolio, including the installation of new solar panels, to further increase the usage rate of green energy.Canon’s Environmental Vision
Canon’s dedication to environmental responsibility is deeply rooted in its corporate philosophy of ‘kyosei,’ which translates to living and working together for the common good. The company has been a pioneer in environmental initiatives since 1988 and aims to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions across product lifecycles by 20501.This transition to renewable energy not only reflects Canon’s environmental consciousness but also sets a precedent for other corporations to follow suit in the journey towards a more sustainable future.
