PATENT NEWS: Canon has scored an important 2026 patent victory against Slingshot Printing LLC after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit preserved Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) rulings that found challenged Slingshot inkjet patent claims obvious and unpatentable. Canon had challenged Slingshot’s patents through inter partes review proceedings involving technology related to inkjet printer heater chips and thermal-control systems, and the PTAB ultimately ruled in Canon’s favor on the challenged claims. Slingshot appealed, but the Federal Circuit left the key PTAB obviousness findings intact, handing Canon another legal victory in the highly competitive printer technology patent arena. The decision is significant for the imaging industry because patents covering printhead heating, temperature control and ink-firing technology can affect competition, licensing and the development of compatible inkjet products. For Canon, the ruling successfully preserves its challenges against Slingshot’s patent claims and reinforces the growing importance of PTAB proceedings in disputes over printer and inkjet technology.
