Canon’s printer ink prices are raising eyebrows after a new study by Swift Ink revealed the staggering cost of brand-name printer supplies, including an estimated $10,997 per gallon for Canon CLI-281XXL ink. According to the study, which analyzed ink and toner costs for 43 printers still sold new in the United States using manufacturer-rated ISO page yields and prices as of October 14, 2026, the budget-priced Canon PIXMA TS3720, retailing for just $54.99, could consume approximately $571 in brand-name ink over three years at a printing rate of 100 pages per month. The research also found that median black-page printing costs were approximately 6.4 cents for cartridge-based inkjet printers, compared with 3.5 cents for monochrome laser printers and less than half a cent for refillable ink-tank models. Meanwhile, compatible and remanufactured supplies offered median page costs roughly one-third of brand-name alternatives across many printer categories, highlighting the potential savings available to consumers and businesses willing to consider aftermarket products. With printer manufacturers often competing on hardware prices, the findings raise an important question: Are consumers getting a bargain on the printer only to pay outrageously high prices for the ink?
