Europe has delivered a massive €550 million blow to China’s Alibaba-owned AliExpress over failures involving illegal, counterfeit and unsafe products, sending a warning that could reverberate through China’s enormous cross-border e-commerce machine—including the toner and printer-supplies trade. European authorities pointed to counterfeit goods, unsafe toys, dangerous cosmetics and other illegal products available through AliExpress, raising a much bigger question: how many questionable products have been allowed to flow into Europe through online marketplaces before regulators finally caught up? While the record fine was not specifically imposed over toner cartridges, the crackdown should put sellers of clone, counterfeit, patent-infringing and potentially non-compliant toner and ink on notice.
