Researchers in the Czech Republic are developing an innovative waste-to-energy process that could give used laser printer toner powder a second life as industrial fuel. Scientists from the Czech Academy of Sciences, working with industry partners through the BIOCIRKL National Centre of Competence, are testing fuel pellets made by combining residual toner powder from spent printer cartridges with sewage sludge. The goal is to reduce landfill waste, recover energy from difficult-to-recycle toner materials, and support a more circular economy. Early tests indicate the pellets provide a high heating value and stable combustion, although additional emissions controls will be necessary before commercial deployment. If successfully scaled, the technology could offer cartridge recyclers, remanufacturers, and waste management companies a sustainable alternative for handling millions of pounds of waste toner generated each year while reducing environmental impact and creating a valuable new energy resource.
