A remarkable laboratory accident in 1977 led to one of the most important breakthroughs in the history of printing technology. While conducting research at Canon, scientist Ichiro Endo accidentally touched a syringe filled with ink using a hot soldering iron, creating a tiny vapor bubble that instantly ejected a droplet of ink. Realizing the potential of this unexpected phenomenon, Endo developed the concept that became thermal inkjet (Bubble Jet) printing, a technology that revolutionized home and office printing by enabling fast, affordable, and high-quality inkjet printers. Canon commercialized the innovation in the 1980s under its Bubble Jet brand, while HP later developed a similar thermal inkjet system. Today, billions of inkjet cartridges have been produced using the same basic principle, making Endo’s accidental discovery one of the most influential innovations in modern printing history.
