He sold a startup to Xerox and built his own personal Versailles.
Now the billionaire may set a record with its sale. Tech billionaire Darwin Deason has invested around $86 million in creating his lavish estate, known as the Sandcastle, perched on the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, California. After years of development, heโs ready to move on and has listed the property for a staggering $108 million, potentially breaking records.
If it sells for close to that price, it would more than double the previous San Diego County record, held by private-equity billionaire Egon Durban, who purchased a property for $44.1 million in 2023.
In 2009, after selling his company, Affiliated Computer Services, to Xerox for $6.4 billion, Deason acquired the home and a nearby parcel for about $26 million. Over six years, he transformed the two lots into a stunning 13,000-square-foot mansion, reportedly spending an additional $60 million in the process.
Inspired by the French Palace of Versailles and the glamorous Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the South of France, the Sand Castle boasts opulent features like sparkling chandeliers, gold-accented ceilings, intricate mosaics, marble floors, and antique statues.
The 10-bedroom estate, located at 1900 Spindrift Drive, primarily serves as a vacation retreat for Deason, who resides in Dallas and owns additional properties in Texas and Mexico, along with a yacht. At 84 years old, he has a net worth of $1.3 billion as of October 23, according to Forbes.
Listing agents Brett Dickinson and Ross Clark of Compass emphasized the uniqueness of the Sandcastle, stating, “In the history of La Jolla, there has never been and will never be another property built on the waterfront like the Sand Castle.” Click here to view all the photos of this amazing home.
