HP’s decision to suspend earnings guidance and warn that PC unit sales could decline through 2027 adds another challenge for the company—and could have important implications for its printing business. While the warning primarily concerns HP’s Personal Systems/PC operations, weaker PC demand can put pressure on the company’s overall revenue, cash flow, margins and cost structure, potentially increasing the importance of the Printing segment to HP’s financial performance. HP’s printing business is already facing pressure, with recent results showing declines in printing revenue, hardware units and supplies revenue. If the PC downturn continues, HP may need to accelerate cost-cutting, prioritize higher-margin products and services, and look for additional growth in commercial printing, managed print services and supplies. For the printer industry, the warning is another sign that HP is operating in a challenging hardware market, where declining device volumes and changing customer buying patterns could make recurring supplies revenue and profitable printing customers increasingly important.
