Ireland’s rapidly expanding data center industry now accounts for 23% of the country’s total electricity consumption, highlighting the enormous energy demands created by cloud computing and artificial intelligence. According to newly released figures, data centers used approximately 7,663 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity in 2025—nearly matching the power consumed by all Irish households combined. The surge has been fueled by continued investment from major technology companies operating large cloud and AI facilities across Ireland. While the sector delivers billions in investment and strengthens Ireland’s position as one of Europe’s leading digital infrastructure hubs, the growing electricity demand is also raising concerns about grid capacity, energy costs, and the nation’s climate goals. As AI adoption continues to accelerate worldwide, Ireland’s experience underscores the increasing challenge of balancing digital growth with sustainable energy resources.
