Italy’s tax authorities are getting a much clearer picture of what happens at the checkout counter, and businesses hiding sales may have fewer places to hide! The country’s new system linking point-of-sale (POS) payment terminals with electronic cash registers is helping authorities cross-check card payments against electronic receipts, with €13.5 billion in additional taxable sales recorded between January and September 2026. The system, introduced on January 1, 2026, is designed to make it harder for businesses to accept card payments without properly reporting the corresponding sales. During the first nine months of 2026, approximately 267.5 million more commercial receipts were transmitted than during the same period in 2025, while the reported taxable sales base increased by 4.1%. Although officials caution that the entire increase cannot be attributed solely to the new system, the message is clear: electronic receipts and POS terminals are becoming powerful tools in Italy’s battle against tax evasion. For the printing industry, it is another reminder that receipt printers, electronic cash registers and connected payment technology remain important players in the increasingly digital world of retail compliance. Say cheese at the checkout—Big Brother may be checking the receipt!
