Amazon is once again giving shelf space to another Chinese-compatible ink seller whose product presentation closely resembles Canon’s genuine PG-245XL cartridge, despite the cartridge having no authorization or affiliation with Canon. The latest example, sold under the MEGAIN brand, raises the same question that has haunted Amazon’s printer supplies marketplace for years: Has Amazon become the preferred marketplace for OEM look-alike products? While Amazon aggressively removes listings over minor policy violations, it continues collecting fees from third-party ink and toner sellers whose packaging, model references, and marketing can leave consumers wondering whether they’re buying genuine Canon products. Critics argue that Amazon has the technology, money, and legal resources to stop confusing look-alike listings but chooses marketplace revenue over stronger brand protection. If Canon believes its trademarks or trade dress are being infringed, many industry observers would argue the company should aggressively pursue every available legal remedy—not only against sellers of allegedly copycat products, but also against any marketplace that knowingly continues to profit from them. Until Amazon treats printer supplies with the same seriousness it applies to counterfeit luxury goods, critics say consumers and OEM manufacturers will continue paying the price while copycat products flourish.
