Microsoft Fixes Printing Issues Caused by January Windows Updates
Microsoft has addressed a significant printing issue that began affecting users after installing Windows updates released in January 2025. The problem, which impacted some USB printers, caused them to print random and erroneous text, often beginning with the header “POST /ipp/print HTTP/1.1.” The bug primarily impacted printers that support both USB Print and IPP Over USB protocols.

The issue, first acknowledged by Microsoft after the January 2025 update (KB5050092), resulted in printers unexpectedly printing strange characters, network commands, and other unrelated data. This problem occurred more frequently when printers were turned on or reconnected after being disconnected.

To resolve the issue, Microsoft released fixes as part of the March 2025 non-security preview updates (KB5053643 and KB5053657) for Windows 10 (version 22H2) and Windows 11 (versions 22H2 and 23H2). These updates are now available, and the fix will be included in the upcoming April 2025 Patch Tuesday cumulative updates for those who haven’t installed the optional March updates.

Microsoft also deployed a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) for enterprise customers earlier in March, addressing the printing problem on business devices. KIR is a feature that allows Microsoft to reverse flawed non-security updates without requiring user intervention.

In a statement, Microsoft emphasized the importance of installing the latest updates, noting that they contain essential improvements and bug fixes, including this printing issue resolution. Users are encouraged to install the most recent updates to ensure their devices remain secure and functional.

In addition to the printing bug fix, Microsoft also resolved another issue affecting Remote Desktop and RDS connections, which was similarly tied to updates from January 2025.

For businesses using Backup & Replication servers or SMB network shares, Veeam reported that they are collaborating with Microsoft to investigate connection errors on Windows 11 24H2 systems.
