The Randburg Licence Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, has temporarily suspended key public services after running short of essential printer consumables, including A4 paper and toner cartridges, highlighting how critical printing supplies remain to everyday government operations. The shortage disrupted learner’s licence bookings, driving licence tests, driver’s licence renewals and Professional Driving Permit (PDP) renewals, leaving customers unable to complete important transactions. Acting licensing director Heston Mabiya confirmed that the centre was awaiting essential consumables and official documents needed to resume normal operations, while affected motorists were advised to postpone visits until supplies become available. The shutdown demonstrates that despite growing government digitization, printers, toner cartridges, paper and secure printed documents remain mission-critical infrastructure—and when the consumables supply chain breaks down, essential public services can quickly grind to a halt.
