Recycled Steel to Power Canon’s New Printers in 2025.
Canon will begin incorporating recycled steel (electric furnace steel sheets) into some of its printing products set for release in 2025, including office multifunction devices (MFDs), home inkjet printers, large-format inkjet printers, and commercial printing presses. The company plans to gradually expand the use of recycled steel across more product lines in the future.

Electric furnace steel sheets are made from steel scrap sourced from used products, reducing the need for new raw materials and increasing the overall recycling rate. Additionally, producing electric furnace steel sheets results in CO2 emissions that are about one-fifth of those from traditional blast furnace steel (made from iron ore), making them a key player in Canon’s decarbonization efforts.

Steel is the second most used material by weight in Canon’s printing products, after plastic. Canon has researched the properties of electric furnace steel sheets and optimized its manufacturing process to incorporate them into its products.

The production of electric furnace steel sheets requires thorough separation of steel from other materials, such as plastic and copper.

Canon Ecology Industry, a Canon group company, currently processes steel scrap collected from used office MFDs, refining it for sale to Tokyo Steel, an electric furnace steelmaker. Between April 2020 and March 2024, over 5,000 tons of steel scrap were supplied to Tokyo Steel.

By continuing this partnership, Canon will further promote the recycling of steel scrap and use the resulting electric furnace steel sheets to create more sustainable products, advancing the effective use of limited resources.
