Ricoh, the global printing and office-technology giant with approximately $16.4 billion in annual sales, has launched a Strategic Review led by its independent Outside Directors, putting profitability, corporate value and the company’s future direction under the microscope. According to Ricoh’s official Strategic Review announcement (see below), the company says its capital profitability has remained below its cost of equity and that its previous mid-term management strategy fell significantly short of its original targets, raising questions about what fundamental changes may be needed to improve earnings and shareholder value. At the same time, Ricoh and ETRIA are pushing deeper into printer remanufacturing and circular manufacturing with their “Circular New” concept, which incorporates recovered components from used products into newly manufactured A3 monochrome multifunction printers (MFPs). Ricoh says the approach can reduce newly sourced material usage from approximately 76% to as little as 21% and, through localized production, cut the product carbon footprint by up to 25%. The first RICOH IM 6010, IM 4510, IM 3510 and IM 2510 models are scheduled for production and shipment in Japan and Europe beginning in the first half of 2027. While Ricoh’s October 6 Strategic Review announcement does not say the company is preparing for bankruptcy, a sale or major layoffs, the review could lead to changes in strategy, investments, operations and its printing/MFP portfolio. Combined with Ricoh’s growing focus on commercial and industrial inkjet, recovered components and circular manufacturing, these developments could mark a major turning point for one of the world’s largest printing companies—and potentially reshape the future of OEM printer remanufacturing, MFP recycling and the circular economy.
