Russia’s war against Ukraine is now dealing a devastating blow to the country’s publishing and printing industry, with Russian attacks reportedly destroying an estimated 13 million books during July and August 2026—roughly one-third of Ukraine’s normal annual book production. The losses include millions of school textbooks, children’s books and commercial titles after warehouses and publishing infrastructure were hit, including a major strike in Kharkiv that reportedly destroyed around 8 million books. Ukrainian publishers estimate the direct value of the destroyed books at approximately UAH 2 billion, or about $45 million, while the true cost could be far higher once lost printing capacity, damaged facilities and the expense of reprinting are included. With Ukraine’s publishing industry already struggling with war-related disruption, rising costs and declining demand, the destruction of millions of books represents not only a major financial crisis but also another serious blow to Ukrainian education, culture and the country’s ability to preserve and distribute its own language and literature.
