Is Essendant the next major office-products domino to fall?
Staples-owned distributor Essendant is facing three new vendor lawsuits in just days, adding fuel to growing concerns about the company’s financial health as it restructures operations, cuts jobs and reportedly searches for additional capital and potential asset deals. The lawsuits involving Crayola, Teh Tung and Amax come on top of an earlier dispute with ECI Software Solutions, while Essendant has warned that failure to secure financing or complete strategic transactions could ultimately force it to cease operations and close. For the office-products, printer, toner and supplies industry, this is a huge red flag: when vendors start going to court for payment or contractual disputes while a major distributor is simultaneously cutting costs and seeking cash, the question becomes how much longer can the business model survive? Essendant has not announced that it is shutting down, but the combination of lawsuits, layoffs, restructuring and financial pressure raises an uncomfortable question for dealers and suppliers nationwide: Is Staples-owned Essendant fighting for survival—and could the fallout shake the entire office-products distribution channel?
