30 XEROX EMPLOYEES TO LOSE JOBS IN MONTEBELLO CALIF.
MONTEBELLO — Tuesday is scheduled to be the last day of work for 30 people who have been employed by Xerox Corp., as the company closes its Rockland office.A supply and distribution center off Dunnigan Drive will close as the Norwalk, Conn.-based company seeks to consolidate its locations."All of these decisions are very difficult, but they help us reduce our costs and improve productivity across the board," company spokesman Bill McKee said.

The company has had a presence in Rockland for 40 years and has occupied 190,000 square feet in the Montebello office park since 2002.The facility was used as a warehouse to supply businesses with office supplies. Some of the jobs are being moved to Xerox offices in Webster, N.Y., near Rochester, while others are being moved to another company, Lindenmeyr Munroe, based in Purchase.

Some employees are being offered other positions within the company, but McKee said he did not know how many. The workers are represented by a union. The company is negotiating severance packages with union representatives, McKee said.Xerox is not the only local company leaving Rockland. Dress Barn, which is in the same Montebello office park, is in the process of eliminating 47 jobs as it moves one of its divisions from its Dunnigan Drive headquarters to Ohio.

Some of those workers had their last day this week, and others will be laid off at the end of May, according to documents filed with the state Department of Labor. The women’s clothing retailer will consolidate its distribution facility with an operation it already has in Columbus, said David Montieth, vice president of human resources.

Dress Barn will keep its corporate headquarters in Rockland for now, Montieth said. A total of 350 people will remain at the facility.Ron Hicks, president and chief executive officer of the Rockland Economic Development Corp., said he was sorry to see Xerox leave the county but was relieved that the bulk of the Dress Barn jobs will remain."You hate to lose even one job," he said.
