300,000 HP CARTRIDGES SEIZED IN MAJOR COUNTERFEIT RAID
Saudi Arabian authorities execute major seizure of counterfeit printing supplies
HP
Saudi Arabia today announced that its collaboration with the Saudi
Arabian Ministry of Commerce and local police has produced the largest
local seizure of HP-targeted counterfeit printing supplies within the
last year. In recent coordinated strikes against manufacturing sites,
warehouses and retail outlets belonging to nine individual companies,
authorities arrested several people and confiscated more than 300,000
illicit print cartridges and components for HP printers.Law-enforcement
officials required nearly two dozen large trucks to haul away huge
quantities of ready-for-sale laser and inkjet printing cartridge
counterfeits as well as equipment and materials for assembling and
packaging the fake products.Within the last year, Saudi
authorities have seized more than 800,000 illegal print cartridges and
components for HP printing systems, and more than 3,000,000 since late
2006.”There are criminal counterfeiting elements that are trying to
establish and spread their illegal activity in the Kingdom and the
Middle Eastern region, but HP and Saudi authorities are achieving
important victories,” said Laszlo Czinege, general manager, Imaging and
Printing Group, HP Saudi Arabia. “HP is committed to protecting its
customers and ensuring they receive the quality experience they’re
expecting. For many young first time users who are deceived by
counterfeits, this will limit their eagerness to engage with technology,
and this has a significant negative impact on the social and economic
development of the Kingdom.”Through its Anti-counterfeiting Programme,
HP actively educates its customers and partners to be vigilant against
fake printing supplies. It also cooperates closely with local and global
law enforcement to dismantle illegal operations that manufacture
counterfeit printing supplies for HP printers. In the region
covering Europe, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Africa, from the
end of 2008 through August 2010, HP has helped authorities seize around
4.9 million finished counterfeits and components. In 2009 alone, the
number of pieces of counterfeits seized represented more than double the
value of items confiscated in the previous year.Globally, over the last
four years, HP conducted 4,723 investigations in 88 countries resulting
in 3,733 enforcement actions (raids and seizures by authorities)
confiscating over 47.23 million units of counterfeit products and
components. Investigations and actions have occurred on every continent
except Antarctica -
