    3M continues to streamline
Will cut 240 jobs in Missouri, shift work to Singapore, California plants
3M Co. will eliminate 240 jobs at an electronic circuits plant in Columbia, Mo., in coming months, part of a continuing strategy of streamlining its manufacturing operations.Work done by the Missouri employees will be consolidated at factories in Singapore and Canoga Park, Calif., 3M said Thursday. The move is part of a continuing consolidation as 3M works to move production closer to customers, said Jacqueline Berry, a 3M spokeswoman.
The circuits made in Columbia are used in ink-jet cartridges. The jobs being eliminated include 200 hourly and 40 salaried employees and will be phased out between now and next June. About half of the Columbia plant’s workforce will remain on the job.

In the last couple of years, Maplewood-based 3M has been constructing about 20 new or expanded manufacturing plants around the globe while also closing a handful. The changes all have been tied to a strategy led by 3M CEO George Buckley to align manufacturing with 3M’s booming international business. The company generates more than 60 percent of its revenue overseas.During a presentation to investors Wednesday in New York, Buckley noted the company has closed about half a dozen manufacturing plants. He mentioned one in Canada, two in Italy, one in Japan and two or three in the United States. Those closures include an integrated circuits plant in Eau Claire, Wis., Berry said, and a roofing granule plant in New Jersey, a flexible circuit plant in Japan and a visual films plant in Italy.Buckley told analysts he’d like to keep the number of plant closures small as 3M works to become more efficient, though he mentioned the company may have more facilities than it needs in Western Europe.
