Memjet
Printhead One may have thought that an inkjet printer would never have
achieved speeds up to 60 pages per minute(ppm), but Silverbrook
Research has done just that; turn this printer to draft mode and you’ll
be spitting out full color 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheets in just 2/3 of a second.
Give it a pricetag under $300 and you’re sure to make a name for
yourself.Until now, you’ve probably never heard of Silverbrook
Research; they’ve been in the dark for the last 13 years quietly
applying for over 3,400 patents for what will soon become the worlds
quickest/cheapest inkjet printer.Using Silverbrook Research’s
Memjet color printing technology, printers will break the industry
standard inkjet speed several times over, and all for a fraction of the
price of a high-speed laser printer.“Memjet’s technology delivers on
the promise of inkjet for the broader market, with very fast speeds,
high-quality color, and significantly lower purchase and operating
costs,” said Robert Palmer, director of printer research at InfoTrends,
Inc., a market analyst firm in Weymouth, MA.Palmer added that this is
clearly a technology to watch, as Memjet is in a quite favorable
position to expand their marketing opportunities.A printer with Memjet
technology can print full-color, photo-quality images at 30ppm,
standard color at 60ppm, and will draft at an incredible 90ppm.Memjet
uses a customized driver chip that calculates and controls 900 million
dots per second with a resolution of 1600×1600 dots per inch, the
industries smallest drop size. The majority of the speed achieved is due
to the unique size of the printhead. Currently, printheads are moved
back and forth to accomplish printing; Memjet makes use of a printhead
that contains over 70,000 nozzles equaling the size of the paper
itself.“Conventional wisdom is that you cannot have high speed, quality
color, and low cost all at once,” said Bill McGlynn, CEO of Memjet’s
home and office business. “This technology turns that notion on its
head, making page-wide color printing practical and cost-effective. We
believe this breakthrough technology will change the printing industry
by eliminating the cost and performance barriers of color, and by
allowing both incumbents and non-imcumbents to compete on a new playing
field.”A typical business-class, 60ppm Memjet-based printer is expected
to retail for under $300; however, given this amazing technology, we’re
sure you won’t find it for under $299.Videos of this impressive
technology can be found at http://www.memjet.com/media.aspx#. -
