B.Y.O.D. To Improve Mobile Printing Market in 2015

The mobile printing market is set to grow in the business sector as an increasing amount of employers adopt a Bring Your Own Device (or BYOD) policy. The benefits of BYOD systems in offices are that employees are able to work remotely, not just from home but from practically anywhere, leading to an increase in employee satisfaction and production; as well as BYOD workers reportedly achieving 37 minutes productive work more per week. Additionally, BYOD employees are able to work flexible hours, use devices they are already accustomed to, and amalgamate their work device and their home device, meaning less hardware.

From employer perspective, BYOD policies significantly reduce costs, eliminating a significant amount of costs incurred by technology. Increase in employee productivity is also expected to increase profits by about $350 per employee per year. As such, BYOD programmes are expected to increase significantly over the next half decade; by 2017, a report by Garner predicts that half of all employers will require employees to provide their own devices for work purposes.

Following the adoption of BYOD, the mobile printing market is set to grow at a proportional rate. Mobile printing allows workers to print documents from remote devices such as tablets and mobile phones wirelessly. The technology involved in mobile printing is comprised of the hardware; the wireless printer itself; and the software, or mobile applications downloaded by workers to their phones and other devices.

Currently, the following companies are seen as the key players in the global mobile printing market: Apple Inc., Canon Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP), Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Xerox Corp. Ltd. Other important market companies include: Breezy, Brother international, Cortado, Epson, Fuji Xerox, Google, Honeywell International, Konica Minolta, Kyocera Document Solutions, Lanier, Lexmark, PrinterOn, Ricoh and Zebra Technologies.

One of the main issues faced by the global mobile printing market is data security. Either side of the mobile printing process poses threats to security breaches. From the printer side, the rate of unclaimed printouts is likely to increase when documents are printed remotely, increasing the risk of sensitive data being left open to interception. From the mobile side, security threats are more severe. Loss or theft of individual workers phones would allow office data to be accessed. Another threat to company security comes in the form of workers downloading third party apps, many of which request access to personal files.

If large companies allow BYOD and mobile printing, the security of their files is left quite literally in the hands of each of their employees. The security vulnerabilities posed by the adoption of the global mobile printing market to companies may cause market growth to slow.
