Brother Ind. Ltd to Invest $54 Million for New Printer Plant in Phillippines

BROTHER Industries Ltd., a diversified company engaged in manufacturing printers based in Nagoya, Japan, will initially invest $12 million to put up a manufacturing facility in the province of Batangas.

In an official announcement posted at the Japan’s Securities and Exchange Commission Web site, Brother Industries president Toshikazu Koike said a local unit provisionally named Brother Industries (Philippines) Inc. would be established in the country as a new manufacturing facility for its printing business.

The facility will be constructed in first quarter of 2012 on a 13.4-hectare area in the First Philippine Industrial Park in Barangay Ulango, Tanauan City. Approximately 200 employees will be hired when commercial operations begin in April next year.

The local unit will manufacture and export parts for inkjet printers. The new facility will be its first production site in the Philippines and fourth within Asia. The Brother Group has four manufacturing facilities for its printing business in Japan, China, Malaysia and Vietnam.

The Brother Group cited the “abundant manpower and human resources with English language skills in the Philippines” as one of the reasons for its locating here. It said it plans to invest an additional $42 million of capital in the new facility after its establishment.

Masaki Kannabe, chief of the production planning department, urged the Philippine Economic Zone Authority through an e-mail to “support us to complete our establishment at the earliest.”

A company statement said Brother Industries had been improving the operations at its manufacturing facilities and was optimizing manufacturing structure on a global basis.
