Canon CEO seen heading Japan’s top business lobby
TOKYO, NOV 05  – The chief executive of Canon Inc., the world’s largest maker of cameras and copiers, will likely be chosen as the next chairman of Japan’s most powerful business lobby, a source close to the matter said on Sunday.
Fujio Mitarai has been viewed for some months as a strong candidate to replace Toyota Motor Corp. chairman Hiroshi Okuda, whose term as head of the Japan Business Federation ends next May.
However, Toyota Vice Chairman Fujio Cho has also been viewed as a possible successor.
The source said the group was moving in the direction of naming Mitarai as chairman and a decision would be announced at the earliest by the end of the month.
Both Mitarai and Cho are currently vice chairmen of the lobby group, which is called Nippon Keidanren in Japanese.
Mitarai, 70, has led Canon to a string of record profits through aggressive sales expansion and bold structural and production reforms. He also has extensive experience abroad.
The source said Cho was not being considered for the top job because Toyota was concerned about a potential backlash in the business community if another one of its executives was given such an influential post.
