Canon launches portable scanner for mobile workers

Canon has unveiled a compact USB-powered scanner designed for mobile professionals to capture and process documents while on the road.

Set to be available from January, the Canon imageFormula P-208 is a slim line device weighing in at just 600g, but still features an automatic feeder enabling up to 10 sheets to be scanned in a single operation.

Its design also incorporates two image sensors that allow it to capture both sides of a document in a single pass, delivering duplex scanning performance of up to 16 images per minute.

For Mac and Windows PC users, the imageFormula P-208 offers a plug-and-scan capability, allowing them to scan over a USB connection without installing any drivers or software thanks to Canon’s CaptureOnTouch Lite software which is embedded in the scanner itself.

Users can also scan to an Apple or Android smartphone or tablet via an optional WU10Wi-Fi Unit accessory and Canon’s free-to-download CaptureOnTouch Mobile app for the relevant platform.

As well as paper documents, the imageFormula P-208 can scan plastic cards such as ID badges and supports scanning capabilities such as correcting skewed images, automatic page size detection, double feed detection and skipping of blank pages.

The portable device can scan at up to 600dpi and also features an image processing algorithm to optimise the reproduction of photographs, text and colour documents, Canon said.

The imageFormula P-208 will be available in the UK and Ireland through Canon sales offices and distributor partners from January 2013. Pricing has yet to be disclosed.

Canon unveils second generation Imagerunner Advance
Canon’s Imagerunner Advance C9200 Pro series is aimed at light production professional print service providers and in-house print facilities.

The C9280, which is available from £45,930 excluding VAT, can print on 330x487mm coated or uncoated substrates up to 300gsm, at speeds of up to 80ppm in monochrome and 70ppm in colour. It can scan up to 200 images per minute and incorporates a new remote shut-down facility and hard drive erase function for increased security

The machine also features a stapling and professional punching facility, inserting, multi-folding pattern capability, booklet making and trimming.

According to the manufacturer the C9280, the only model in the next generation series, aims to bridge the gap between the Canon Imagerunner Advance C1 Plus for office environments and the Canon Imagepresses for low- and high-end professional print.

New on-demand technology has helped lower warm up times to 31 seconds, while the model incorporates the latest EFI controller with a choice of two Fiery system 10 powered RIPs: an Imagepass A2 onboard RIP for "light production environments", such as copy shops and CRDs, and Canon Colourpass external RIP for a small, new-to-digital commercial production environment looking to increase productivity.

European product marketing manager for professional print solutions Paul Knowles said that the latest model was the result of feedback and insights provided by Canon’s partners and customers in professional print.

"We’ve fine tuned the features to improve productivity, flexibility and security while also providing a strong emphasis on environmental credentials. This next generation is ideal for ad hoc, short run work and business applications such as training materials, reports, dissertations, newsletters, booklets and brochures," he added.

Last month Canon also unveiled the second generation Imagerunner Advance C8200 black and white series for light production environments. The range, which consists of three models, the C8205, C8285 and C8295, also offers staple and finishing technology, a hard drive erase feature and remote shutdown capability. It is available from £26,690 excluding VAT.

Knowles said he was anticipating strong demand for the new ranges. "We are expecting increased interest in the new models from CRDs and in-house printing departments and print-for pay-jobs attracted by key business drivers such as savings made by bringing more jobs in house, improved management of capital and operational expenses, competitive running jobs and a quick ROI."
