Canon Sues LD Products For Patent Infringement.

Canon sued LD Products for patent infringement yesterday based on LD’s sales of compatible HP CF210/211/212/213 color cartridges. The patent asserted is US 8588646, which covers a mechanism that spaces the developing roller from the OPC drum. LD Products is the only party named.

This shows once again that remanufactured product will always be the safest aftermarket option. This case involves a completely different set of cartridges than the dongle gear case where the clone manufacturers recently had a decision (which is reversable on appeal) go their way. OEMs have hundreds of patents at their disposal covering nearly every cartridge they offer. It is all but impossible for a clone manufacturer to successfully navigate that minefield.

Amazingly, just yesterday Aster released a blog post in which they explained that they only sell remanufactured versions of these cartridges. Aster said, “based on the broad protections [in the ‘646 patent], Aster has not seen a compliant solution that is truly “patent-safe.”

It’s like they knew this was coming? and they should because the Chinese Goverment spies on our industry all the time.
