Canon to more than double large inkjet photo printer output

2007 TOKYO–Canon Inc. said Thursday that it will more than double
production of ink-jet photo printers for professional photographers at
a cost of Y1 billion.The Japanese maker of office equipment and camera
products will produce 150,000 of such printers at its Fukushima Canon
Inc. production subsidiary in 2008, up from the 60,000 printers the
subsidiary produced last year.The company aims to meet growing demand
for printers that can print photos with high resolution and in sizes as
large as A3, in a bid to enhance its operations in competition with
Seiko Epson Corp., its bigger rival in this market. A Canon spokesman
said the company just began offering the first model of its large photo
printing Pixus Pro series last year and added another model this
year.The latest move is part of its efforts to boost its share of the
global market of ink-jet printers for large photos to 50% by 2008 from
20% it held in 2006.
