    Canon Hiking Employment To 6,000 With New Laser Printer Facility

    MANILA, Philippines – Canon Group in the Philippines will ramp up employment to 6,000 by end of 2013 from the current 1,500 as its P20-billion laser printer manufacturing facility in Batangas starts commercial operation next year.Alan Chng, president of Canon Marketing (Philippines) Inc., announced this during the company’s 15th Anniversary celebration in the country on Wednesday.“The future of Canon in the Philippines is bright,” Chng said.Canon has three business units in the country that employ 500 Filipinos each. These are Canon Marketing Philippines Inc., Canon Information Technologies, and Canon Business Machines.

    Canon Marketing is Canon’s flagship business unit in the country. Employing 500 Filipinos, it is responsible for marketing and distribution of extensive product line of input and output devices including digital camera. Canon Information Technologies, which also employ 500 people, is one of the largest Canon research and development facilities outside Japan.

    Canon Business Machines is the new manufacturing company of Canon focused on the production of laser printers and tools for an optimized production system. With P20 billion investments, the Japanese firm will establish its laser printer manufacturing plant on a 22-hectare manufacturing facility in Batangas.

    It will initially employ 6,000 people at the plant, which is expected to start commercial operations in April next year.Philippine Economic Zone Authority director-general Lilia B. De Lima said that once the export-oriented printer manufacturing project is on its full commercial operation, it is expected to generate a total of 30,000 both direct and indirect employment opportunities.For Canon Information Technologies, De Lima cited this business unit in the Philippines for having developed high-tech digital cameras including one of the cameras being used to film the blockbuster movie “Avengers”.

    She said there are 700 Japanese companies out of the over 2,700 companies that locate in the various PEZA zones.Chng, who has been running Canon for the more than two years, reported that Canon has been posting double digit growth year on year. As an industry leader, it accounts for 15 percent market share in all the product segments where it is presence.For the past six years, Chng said that Canon is number one in the domestic market for inkjet printers, video cameras and DSLR cameras.It has established offices in six major regions in the country, 17 Canon concept stores, and 300 authorized dealers nationwide.Canon Asia Marketing Group president and CEO Hideki Ozawa said in a speech that Canon is paying close attention to Asia because of its strong and rapid growth.

    “Without question, the Philippines is a very important country to Canon,” Ozawa said citing the decision of Canon to invest P20 billion for the laser printer manufacturing facility here.Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Toshinao Urabe said in a speech that Canon’s huge investment in the Philippines is a “vote of confidence” by the world’s leading digital imaging company.

    Canon in the Philippines has established itself as a socially responsible corporate citizen with advocacy such as Canon GreenNation, Canon Project Rebuild, Print for Smiles, Reams of Hope, among other socio-civic projects. On its 15th anniversary, Canon donated P1 million for the ABS-CBN’s “Bantay Kalikasan” project.

    It has been recognized by the Department of Trade and Industry with the Corporate – Gold Bagwis Seal of Excellence.Globally, Canon is a $45.7 billion company with one of the most extensive product lines of input and output devices. It is the No. 4 Top Corporate US patent holder for 2010.
