A River Grove church is asking that residents give them their empty printer cartridges instead of throwing them in the trash — saving the environment and perhaps a few souls in the process.

Ronda Shotsberger, business manager for St. Cyprian Catholic Church in River Grove, said they're aiming to collect enough cartridges to receive a donation of $500 through FundingFactory. FundingFactory is a fundraising-through-recycling company, which was founded in 1977 with a mission of recycling or remanufacturing used toner and inkjet printer cartridges.

Shotsberger said they've been collecting cartridges for about a year, but would like more people inside and outside the church to donate more. Currently, they're looking for empty cartridges from the following printer brands: Brother, Canon, Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark, Hasler and NEO.

"The money we raise goes to fund our religious education program," she said. "The money we raise goes to pay for books and supplies they need."

The church's religious education program consists of weekly classes that shares the Catholic religion and faith with parents and prepare students and adults through the process of living a Catholic Christian life.

She said although they'd never turn anyone away who wanted to be a part of the program, every little bit helps and helps the planet as well.

"It's win for our environment and a win for the church," she said.

Donations can be dropped of at the church's rectory, located at 2601 Clinton St., or contact Shotsberger at 708-453-4800 for more information.
