November  2006 — OfficeSupplyOutfitters, an online imaging supplies retailer, says that online sales of compatible brand third party toner and inkjet cartridges are now at an all time high. The second biggest office expense for a business are its toner and inkjet cartridge purchases. Compatible brand ink cartridges, also known as generic cartridges, are one way of controlling that expense.”Compatible brand toner cartridges and inkjet cartridges are a great savings for any consumer and are now becoming a mainstream purchase,” says Mike Gardner, the company’s president . “A decade ago it was a ‘build it in your garage’ business and the quality of your generic toner cartridge would be questionable at best. Now, publicly held companies are manufacturing these cartridges by the millions and with the same quality controls employed by the first party toner and inkjet printer manufacturers.”Visit a Walgreens, Staples or Office Depot and you will find their generic brands right next to the first party brands. Next to an HP brand toner cartridge you may see an Office Depot brand cartridge. Having the office supply superstores endorsing compatible toner and ink products provides a tremendous amount of validity to the compatible lines, says OSO.According to Lyra Research, when asked about third party toner cartridges, Canon and Xerox have been quoted as saying that as long as their patents aren’t infringed upon, “It’s great for the consumer”. In fact, Xerox participates in third party sales developing toner cartridges for HP brand printers as a part of its “compatible” line.An inkjet printer can be purchased at just about anywhere for around $200. The original inkjet cartridges produced by the manufacturer of the printer could, for many companies, exceed the cost of the printer itself in less than a year! With the price of compatible or generic toner and inkjet cartridges being as much as half the price of the original and compatible brand imaging supplies becoming a part of the mainstream, you’re sure to see more price conscious consumers moving in that direction.
