Compatibles Dominate as Ukraine Consumables Market Declines
( Tonernews.com:With The Average household income of $3500 Yearly and practically a war against Putin's Russia, do you really think the people of Ukraine are printing anything these days, or really give a crap about toner or ink)

Kyiv, April 30, 2014 – According to recent research by IDC, the overall Ukrainian market for hardcopy peripherals consumables, both ink and toner, contracted over 13% in volume year on year in 2013 to around 21.7 million units. In value terms, the market declined nearly 17% to $107.1 million in the same period.

Given the difficult economic situation in the country, with business activity and consumer purchasing power seriously diminished, it is not surprising that non-originals/compatibles completely dominate the consumables market.

In volume terms, OEM consumables represent only 4.7% of the ink cartridge market and 9.6% of toner shipments. In spite of this, penetration of compatible cartridges is also extremely small. In the ink market, bulk ink used for continuous ink supply system (CISS) and cartridges refilling by end users accounts for the majority of non-original shipments. In the toner consumables space, refilling services account for 78.5% of market volume. Unlike the situation in many CEE countries with similar contraction rates of original consumables, clones do not play a significant role in Ukraine's market woes.

"Local price sensitivity is not the only reason for large-scale use of refilled cartridges and CISS," says Program Manager Alexey Gvozdenko, IDC Ukraine. "Such consumables provide satisfactory results for most users, so they don’t see any sense in paying several times more for originals. Moreover, the low cost per print provided by refilling motivates them to print more".

IDC predicts that the Ukrainian consumables market will continue to decline in the coming years, as a result of the difficult political and economical situation in the country. Shipments of hardcopy peripherals have contracted over the last three years, and the trend is expected to continue in 2014, which will further decrease demand for consumables.
