Mississippi County sells $35k worth of toner cartridges for $2500.00

Hinds County will receive $2,500 for a stockpile of unused toner and printer ink originally valued at about $35,000.A recent audit performed by the county’s administrator and purchasing department turned up the toner and printer ink, even though the county’s contract for master copying machines provides it.

Hinds County District 4 Supervisor Phil Fisher called for the audit. Much of the stockpile had been squirreled away in drawers or closets; some was obsolete due to changes in technology.

County Administrator Carmen Davis and several supervisors say the surplus of toner and ink is the result not of over-ordering but of the county’s 2008 conversion to an electronic-based system of scanning instead of copying, and emailing rather than faxing. She said about 22 printers and five fax machines were found unnecessary in November, about 10 percent of those in use.

Supervisors on Monday approved a $2,500 bid offered by Jackson-based Classic Printing. Three bids were submitted, with Classic’s being the highest.

"I think we’d better do this quickly before they (Classic Printing) change their mind," District 1 Supervisor and board president Robert Graham said. "That’s $2,500 lying in drawers around the county.""I have the check right here," said county purchasing director Timothy Lewis.
