Dell confirms to double China manufacturing capacity via new factory in Xiamen
LONDON
– Dell China Co Ltd, the China subsidiary of Dell Inc, confirmed
earlier reports that it is to more than double its production capacity
in China through the opening of a new factory in Xiamen.The 594,000
square foot factory, Dell’s second in the city, formally opens today.
The company’s first factory in Xiamen supplies customers in mainland
China, one of its fastest-growing businesses.Steve Felice, president of
Dell Asia Pacific and Japan, said the opening of the new facility
illustrated the company’s ‘long-term commitment to… this important
country’.The China Business News reported in March that the company had
won verbal approval for the plant from the local government. Dell’s
Xiamen operations produce over 3.5 mln personal computers a year,
generating annual revenue of around 5 bln usd.In 2004, Dell had a 7.2
pct share of China’s personal computer market, ranking fourth after
Lenovo, which had a 25.1 pct share, Founder with a 9.9 pct share and
Tsinghua Tongfang with 7.8 pct, according to figures from the
international consultants Gartner Inc.
