Duke Moves to Remanufactured Toner Cartridges
Intent is to help the environment while saving money

    June  2005

Durham, N.C. — When it comes to printer toner cartridges, beginning July 1, Duke is going recycling.

After that date, Corporate Express will substitute remanufactured inkjet and laser toner cartridges for the original manufactured brand on all Duke orders. Corporate Express is Duke’s sole-source office products supplier.

If a remanufactured option does not yet exist for certain printer models, the original brand will be provided.

Executive Vice President Tallman Trask III said the new policy will help Duke realize significant savings while also helping the environment. In the past, concerns about the quality of recycled cartridges have limited their use at Duke. However, Trask said the newest generation has proven to be of equal quality to the original manufactured brands.

“As an environmental steward in our community, Duke University has the opportunity to make a significant impact through our purchasing decisions while also reducing our expenses,” Trask said.

“Remanufactured inkjet and laser toner cartridges have achieved reliability and price levels that make a strong case for their use,” he added. “Average savings range from 28 percent per inkjet cartridge and 33 percent per laser cartridge. Switching to remanufactured cartridges will result in cost savings to Duke University and Health System of approximately $400,000 per year.”

Trask said that printer equipment warranties will not be voided because of using remanufactured cartridges, and Corporate Express guarantees the quality of the cartridges. Once used, Corporate Express will accept the cartridges for recycling.

The Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, Duke Health Raleigh Hospital and Duke University Hospital are among the Duke units already using remanufactured cartridges.
