Amended waste directive passed by MEPs
February,
2007 Last week members of the European parliament (MEPs) voted to
accept the amended Waste Directive, which may affect users of Canon
printer cartridges or HP printer cartridges.Put forward by Caroline
Jackson MEP, the amendments include a number of new measures, including
the introduction of waste targets to preserve waste levels at those
produced in 2008 by 2012, reports Environmental Data Interactive
Exchange (EDIE).”What we’re suggesting is very modest, not terribly
ambitious, but it’s going to be a lot of work trying to get that agreed
by the European Commission,” said Ms Jackson.”It’s a difficult area
because we don’t have enough information on how much waste is being
produced,” she added in an interview with EDIE.The amended directive
also establishes cross-community recycling targets with require the
recycling of 70 per cent of construction, industrial and demolition
waste recycled and 50 per cent of municipal waste, which may include
used Epson printer cartridges for 2020.Unless passed by the European
Union’s Council of Ministers, the amended directive will be returned
for a second reading to the European Parliament.
