Florida Printer Expanding With National Jobs
    By Don Ruane

Conducting all business functions with a tailor-made program turned out to be a good fit for Intech Printing and Direct Mail of Naples.

Intech was able to emerge from the recession and set the groundwork for today’s operations by developing its own integrated computer system instead of buying something off the shelf like a lot of other businesses.

“We’re not working with any out of the box solution. We developed it ourselves,” Intech owner Dave Wacker said.

The company can tweak its system as issues arise so it doesn’t have to worry about waiting for updates or buying expensive new programs to replace discontinued models.

“There’s a cost savings because we’re our own developer. It can be enhanced and changed,” Wacker said.

The in-house technology links all parts of the business from estimating a job to delivering the product.

“It’s what sets us apart,” Wacker said.

The company also used technology to expand its reach from being a printer for local clients to one with clients across the nation. The company’s BestPrintingOnline.com site opened Intech’s lineup of services to customers across the country who need materials from business cards to sophisticated annual reports or direct mailing services.

Intech is poised now for continued growth as the economy gets better, according to Wacker.

“Our business has grown the last couple of years. This past year we grew over 15 percent in revenue,” Wacker said.

While business sagged during the recession, the signs of a comeback are appearing.

“A lot of people are coming back to doing annual reports,” said sales and marketing director Sue Lampitt. Many of them are nonprofit organizations.

Intech relied heavily on the real estate industry and learned, Wacker said, to diversify as a result of the crash. Clients have been nurtured in health care, education and the nonprofit areas.

“The past two or three years we’ve seen steady improvement (in the economy). Now we’re starting the see the effect of the baby boomers being able to sell their homes. I’m quite optimistic from what I see and hear,” Wacker said.

Intech also wins client approval for its respect for the environment. It pays fees, auditing costs and keeps records required to remain certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and Sustainable Forestry Initiative. About 85 percent of the paper used for printing comes from forests managed in a way to sustain the resources as opposed to harvesting it and moving on to another forest.

The certification was first acquired in 2008. Intech was among 1 percent of all the printers in Florida to be recognized.

“It’s second nature to us now,” said Lampitt.

Some clients require the certifications, according to Wacker.

“We do it for them. We do it for us because it’s the right thing to do,” Wacker said.

Their use of soy inks and the paper from well-managed forests was a factor in choosing Intech last summer for all the printing needs of the Naples Botanical Garden, said Amber Ericson, business development and marketing coordinator at the garden.

“Coming from an environment organization, everything like that is important to us,” Ericson said.

Other factors also played into the move.

“Their customer service is outstanding. Sue Lampitt will fight to get us the best cost,” Ericson said.

Intech also has the ability to archive projects, so when the Garden needs more printed materials they can be produced and delivered quickly, Ericson said.

Intech specializes in high-end products, according to Lampitt.

“A lot of this is high-end events and annual reports,” said Lampitt.

Direct Mail also is an important part of the business.

“We’re more than ink on paper,” Lampitt said. The company builds databases and manages them for clients.

“We’re about the data. A lot of people don’t know what to do with it,” she said.

Intech started out in 1987 as Naples Graphics and changed to Naples Graphics and Printing four years later.

As the Internet came on in 2003, the company expanded from graphics into direct mail.

“Intech in tune with technology” became the company’s slogan, Wacker said.

Wacker’s father started the company. He was in the sales end of the business in Washington, D.C. before retiring to Florida.

“He retired in 1986 and got a little antsy,” Wacker said. So his parents opened a small shop with four employees while he was in college, Wacker said.

“I decided to come back and help them. I bought the business in 2000,” said Wacker, who has 20 employees now.

“It’s a total team effort. We’ve always worked hard to assemble the right people,” Wacker said.
